DENVER EATING DISORDER AND OBESITY TREATMENT SPECIALIST

"I knew that I had a problem, but I was too embarrassed to talk with anyone about it.  Then I read an article about eating disorders in the newspaper -- Dr. Dorie was interviewed about her eating disorder and how she now helps others in recovery.  I felt like she could understand me, so I made an appointment.  I'm glad I did, because now I am getting the help I need."
   -- Kayla H., Denver, CO

"My eating disorder started when I was in the 8th grade.  All of my friends were trying to lose weight, and it was a big competition to be the thinnest.  I thought that being thin was the only way to fit in.  But when  my hair started falling out, I knew something was wrong, and I tried to eat more, but I just couldn't do it.  With Dr. Dorie's help, I made small changes in my eating disorder behaviors.  I learned that I had much more to be proud of than being the thinnest.  I am going to college this Fall, and it feels good to know that I am leaving my eating disorder behind."
    --Tammy P., Denver, CO

"I had sessions with Dr. Dorie ten years ago.  I am happy to say that I still live free of eating disorders today. Complete recovery is possible!"
    -- Karen C., Canton, OH

"I'm an emotional eater.  I eat when I'm anxious, lonely, bored, you name it.  I eat when I'm happy and content, too.  I guess I just like to eat.  But I don't like to eat all the time, because I feel full, bloated, and lethargic.  Not to mention the fact that I am very overweight.  I started telephone sessions with Dr. Dorie so she can help me change my relationship with food.  I don't want to live to eat.  I want my life to be open for more meaning."
        -- Mary S., Dallas, TX

"I am in my 40's and I have been struggling with bulimia for more than 20 years.  I have tried to beat this so many times with no success.  Finally, Dr. Dorie helped me address my past of abusive relationships, and helped me see how my eating disorder was just repeating this same pattern of abuse.  I have been free of my eating disorder for six months, and I am also in a loving relationship with my new boyfriend.  I am so grateful for my new life!"
    --Marcia K., Boulder CO

"For me, it was about control.  Work controlled me, my parents controlled me, my wife controlled me.  Eating and weight were the only things I felt like I could control.  But my eating disorder left me out of control.  Dr. Dorie helped me improve my work situation and my relationships, so that I didn't need an eating disorder as a way to cope.  I still have issues do deal with, but I have confidence in my ability to handle these issues.  I notice that I think more clearly and I make better choices when I am not starving my body.  I like my healthy path."
     -- John P., Louisville, CO

"When I first started sessions with Dr. Dorie, I was throwing up everything I ate.  I couldn't stop.  She suggested that we have 3-hour sessions, with a small meal at the beginning.  Reluctantly, I agreed.  I told her what my safest foods were, and we started with those.  She had a plateful, while I nibbled on a few bites.  We talked about what it was like to eat.  It was awful.  We talked about other things.  It got easier.  By the time the session was over, I felt OK about what I had eaten.  For the first time in weeks, I didn't purge.  This gave me hope."
     -- Diane T., Denver, CO

"I have been through inpatient treatment twice.  I hated the Boost shakes if I didn't eat everything on my meal plan.  I hated the meal plans, period.  I hated having to gain so much weight in such a short period of time.  I hated being away from my family.  I hated that it cost so much money and I went right back where I started.  With Dr. Dorie, things were different.  She helped me take ownership of my recovery, instead of it being forced upon me.  I have been free of my eating disorder for three years."
      --Molly S., Denver, CO

I Know What It’s Like
To Have An Eating Disorder

I went on my first diet when I was 10 years old.  By age 11, I had become anorexic.  My parents threatened to have me tube-fed, and so I started to eat more and regained weight.  However, the issues that caused my eating disorder were never addressed.  So, I continued to struggle with eating disorders in middle school, high school, and on into college.  I would swing between extremes of restrictive eating followed by binge eating, and my weight fluctuated dramatically.  I then started making myself throw up after I felt like I ate too much, which led to daily bulimic habits.  I would deliberately buy food to binge eat and then purge, multiple times a day.  I only ate if I was going to binge, and I only binged if I was going to purge.  Exhausted and scared, I realized that I needed to stop.  But I couldn't do it on my own.  I needed help.  Can you relate?

I Also Know What It’s Like To Be Free

My first step towards freedom was meeting with a therapist who specialized in the treatment of eating disorders.  She explained that she had suffered from eating disorders and overcame them, which gave me hope.  With her support and guidance, I discovered the issues that caused my eating disorder and found new ways to cope.  I made peace with food and my body, and my eating disorder symptoms began to dissipate.  Days, weeks and months went by without any binges, purges or restrictions.  I began to live as if I had never had an eating disorder.  Finally, I knew I was free!  Now, as a Licensed Professional Counselor, I use my personal and professional experience to help others overcome eating disorders.  Would you like me to help you?

Complete Recovery Can Be
Your Reality

I believe that complete recovery from eating disorders is possible for everyone.  I know, because I live it.  The key is that you believe it is possible for you.  Some clinicians consider eating disorders to be incurable diseases, with the treatment goal of symptom management.  With this perspective, the best possible outcome would be following a meal plan to control eating and prevent relapse for the rest of your life.  Not a good prognosis!  The truth is, eating disorders are not diseases.  They are temporary conditions which result in an attempt to cope with life.  When new, healthier means of coping are introduced, the eating disorder has no purpose.  Healthy eating patterns can permanently replace disordered behaviors.  You can truly live free of your eating disorder, forever!  Isn't this what you really want?

Let’s Take A Journey

Complete recovery begins with a single step, reaching out for help.  I am here to help you.  Together, we can walk your path of recovery.  I am here as your guide.  I will give you a roadmap so you know where you've come from and where you are going.  When you feel like you are getting lost, I will help you find your way.  I will provide you with strategies, tools and resources for support.  I will help you find what you need to succeed.  I will be with you on your path of recovery, guiding you the entire way, until you are free.  Are you ready to begin?

Move Forward At Your Own Pace

A part of you may want to be free of your eating disorder, but another part of you may be afraid to let go.  After all, your eating disorder has pretty much become your way of life, so as much pain as it may cause you, it also feels familiar and safe.  I will meet you exactly where you are.  If 51% of you wants to recover, but 49% is still not sure, we'll work with that.  I will help you understand the purpose that your eating disorder has been serving, and together we'll find new things that will work even better than your eating disorder.  When you are ready, you will begin to let your eating disorder go.  I will support you in this process, as you let go of old behaviors which no longer serve you, and start your new way of life.  Does this sound good?

What’s Eating You?

It's not about what you're eating (or not eating), it's about what's eating you.  Are you stressed?  Depressed?  Unfulfilled?  Overwhelmed?  You may not know what you are feeling, because you are using your eating disorder to avoid having to feel anything.  Starving is an attempt to minimize feelings.  Bingeing is a way to stuff them down.  Purging is a form of emotional release.  Your eating disorder may temporarily prevent you from having to feel difficult or painful emotions.  But those emotions do not go away.  And when they return, so does your eating disorder.  But it's an insatiable hunger, which binge eating cannot satisfy nor starvation deny.  It's not about food.  What are you really hungry for?

Feed Your True Hunger!

Recovery is about dealing with what's eating you, by feeling your emotions and feeding your true hunger.  You may hunger for love, acceptance, comfort, peace, and confidence.  You may hunger for insight, awareness, compassion, healing and growth.  You may hunger to discover and become "who you really are."  You are not your eating disorder.  Your eating disorder is not your identity.  It is like a mask, and I am here to help you remove that mask, to discover what lies beneath it.  I am here to help you live the life you were meant to live, free of your eating disorder, free to be who you truly want to be.  Do you know?

How Much Does Your Soul Weigh?

You probably know how much your body weighs.  In fact, you probably weigh yourself more than once a day.  First thing in the morning, after going to the bathroom, after a workout, after a binge, after a purge.  But how much does your soul weigh?  Do you feel like you even have a soul?  You do -- it is the core essence of who you really are.  Your soul is your inner wisdom, your intuition.  But your eating disorder is in the way, creating a heavy burden on your soul.  You probably feel lost, confused, and uncertain about your purpose in life.  You likely make choices to please others, not knowing your true desires.  I will help you reconnect with your your intuition, so you can make the choices that are right for you.  What would this be like?

Trust Your Intuition

Reconnected with your intuition, you will know how to overcome your eating disorder.  No need for dieticians and meal plans -- you will become an intuitive eater, who knows the type and amount of food needed for optimal wellbeing.  No need for psychiatrists and psychoanalysis -- you will become an intuitive thinker, who dwells in positive beliefs, emotions and experiences.  I am here as your guide, to help you listen to your intuition and to practice using your intuition in your everyday life.  I am unlike any other therapist who works with eating disorders, because I don't treat the symptoms, I help you heal their cause.  My approach is unlike any traditional treatments, because you heal from the inside out.  What does your intuition say is the right treatment approach for you?
